An effective postpartum recovery

An effective postpartum recovery

Let’s depart from our usual line to talk discuss a subject that, although related to health, we tend to associate more to aesthetics: The obsession with achieving the perfect body at all costs. It is precisely in that ‘at all costs’ where the problem lies. We don’t care what we need to do to have”Jennifer Lopez’s ass” or to resemble this or that celebrity or model or celebrity according to El Mundo Vida Sana.

We could not agree more with this article, which also contains useful advice from one of the members of the Women’s Unit team, Dr. Alfonso Duque Frischkorn. Yes, some of its contents may be controversial but, in this case, the end justifies the means.

We adhere the recommendations of Dr. Duque Frischkorn, which point towards the advice that women must follow to improve their physical appearance, but also their health and, therefore, well-being, in a very specific moment of their lives: postpartum.

Women who have just given birth should not expect miraculous comebacks such as the ones reported by supermodels or actresses. At the Unidad de la Mujer we take a more realistic approach and recommend the following:

Tips for recovery after giving birth

  • About five or six weeks after childbirth you should start to recover the pelvic floor tone with Kegel exercises and perform hypopressive sit-ups, always under the supervision of a specialist (in case of cesarean, recovery will take longer).
  • The diet must be healthy and should include a variety of foods to compensate for the wear and tear that breastfeeding supposes. The physical and mental fatigue faced by women during the ostpartum period requires vitamins and nutrients. Breastfeeding can also accelerate postpartum recovery. This is the only truly effective trick.
  • Sexual relations should be avoided during the recovery period (40 days) are not recommended. It is the time genitalia and the body in general return to normal. After this time a check-up is recommended.
  • The recovery will depend on several factors, including whether the delivery was vaginal or by cesarean section and, in any case, the specialized and personalized advice will be key to ensure the woman’s well-being.
