Myth or Reality: Is a cesarean delivery always the best option?
By Dr. Ángel Lorenzo Álvarez, gynecologist at the Women's Unit of the Ruber International Hospital
Often, around the time of childbirth , doubts and beliefs arise that don't always align with medical reality. One of the most common is thinking that a cesarean section is always the best option. But how true is this?
The best option: eutocic vaginal delivery
As Dr. Ángel Lorenzo Álvarez, gynecologist at the Women's Unit of the Ruber International Hospital, explains, vaginal delivery, especially when it occurs naturally and without complications—what is known as a eutocic delivery—remains the best option for ending a pregnancy . This method promotes a faster recovery for the mother and carries fewer risks overall, both for her and the baby.
When is a cesarean section indicated?
A cesarean section is a safe and necessary surgical procedure in certain situations, but its use should always be based on medical criteria . Dr. Lorenzo points out that this method of delivery is reserved for cases in which vaginal delivery could pose a risk, such as when the fetus is in an abnormal position (breech or transverse lie), or when other factors compromise the health of the mother or baby.
What if I've already had a cesarean section?
Another common myth is that a woman cannot have a vaginal birth after a previous cesarean section. However, in most cases, women who have had a cesarean can and should choose to attempt a vaginal birth in future pregnancies , provided their clinical condition allows it. This option, known as VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), can be completely safe under medical supervision.
Cesarean section is a valuable tool in modern medicine, but it shouldn't be considered the default best option . As Dr. Lorenzo rightly points out, the ideal is to individualize each case and, whenever possible, opt for a normal vaginal delivery.
