Humanized Caesarean sections at the Ruber International Women's Unit
According to one of the latest reports published by the Ministry of Health, around 25% of births in Spain are by Caesarean section.. A procedure chosen primarily when vaginal delivery is contraindicated, and under medical criteria, and whose concept has evolved greatly in recent years thanks to what we call humanized cesarean sections.
Thus, thanks to Dr. Sebastián Ignacio Sessa Méndez, Gynecologist at the Women's Unit of the Ruber International HospitalLet's discover what characterizes a humanized cesarean section and what the main advantages of its practice are.
What are humanized cesarean sections?
Humanized cesarean sections are those in which the surgical act itself is relegated to the background, to convert the main focus of attention of the procedure for the mother and the birth of the baby.
To achieve this, both the surgeons and the rest of the healthcare personnel present collaborate to help create an environment that is as intimate and respectful as possible for the mother. In addition, if the patient so wishes, she will be accompanied at all times by her baby and her partner.
It is very important to point out that the humanization of a cesarean section does not increase any risk compared to traditional cesarean section.
What are the most important differences with a traditional cesarean section?
- One of the main differences is that, in the case of humanized cesarean sections, the couple will always be present, if, as we mentioned previously, the mother so wishes. While in the case of traditional cesarean sections, sometimes, because it is a surgical procedure, the presence of a companion is not permitted.
- In humanized cesarean sections Skin-to-skin contact with the baby is encouraged From the moment of birth. The skin-to-skin method consists of placing the newborn in skin-to-skin contact with the mother immediately after birth, preferably. Thus, there are several reasons why the practice of skin-to-skin care is promoted: to relax the baby by regulating its heartbeat and breathing; to reduce the stress generated during childbirth thanks to the decrease in cortisol; to improve thermoregulation; and to promote the baby's instinctive latch and, therefore, the establishment of breastfeeding.
- On the other hand, in a humanized cesarean section a warm and human environment is promoted, taking into account aspects such as temperature, noise, lighting control, etc., which are adapted to provide greater comfort for both mother and baby. In many cases, if the mother so desires, music chosen by the mother can even be used.
- Delayed cord clamping. This practice consists of Wait 1 to 3 minutes after birth before clamping the umbilical cordThe reason is that this increases the baby's iron reserves.
- Early initiation of breastfeeding. As we explained earlier, by promoting skin-to-skin contact with the mother, it is possible to encourage the initiation of breastfeeding, encouraging the baby's instinctive grasp.
