The Gynecological Oncology Unit of the Women's Unit at Ruber International Hospital is led by Drs. Julio Álvarez Bernardi y José Rubio Valtueña.

Prevention and diagnosis

Gynecological oncology is one of the fields of medicine that has evolved the most, both in diagnosis and in possible treatments, whether medical or surgical.

Early diagnostic:

Early diagnosis is the most important factor in improving a patient's prognosis and allowing us to use less aggressive treatments that improve not only survival but also the quality of life of our patients.

Periodic reviews:

This has been possible thanks to the establishment of annual review guidelines that allow us to systematically screen for oncological pathology in gynecology. These include techniques such as HPV (human papillomavirus) determination and typing, routine vaginal ultrasound, and breast examination using digital mammography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Cervical cancer

Worldwide, it remains the most common tumor of the female genital tract. In Spain, it accounts for 4.5% of cancers suffered by women, behind breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers.

Early diagnosis is considered essential for successful treatment of this process.

Once the diagnosis has been made and the extent of the tumor determined, it is important to implement appropriate treatment, which, if possible, will preferably be surgical and should be performed by a team of gynecologists with expertise in oncologic surgery.

This team of surgeons will be responsible for assessing the type of surgery and the most appropriate approach: vaginal (Schauta-Amreich) or abdominal/laparoscopy (Wertheim-Meigs), in order to achieve the best results for the patient.

Endometrial cancer

It represents 6.7% of all female cancers. It is the most common malignant gynecological tumor, excluding breast cancer, and is also 40% more common than ovarian cancer and more than twice as common as cervical cancer.

As with any oncological condition, early diagnosis is crucial for this type of disease. The use of screening techniques, such as vaginal ultrasound, allows for early detection of malignant and premalignant endometrial lesions.

This suspicion should be confirmed by diagnostic hysteroscopy, a minimally invasive technique that, painlessly and in the office, allows direct visualization of the endometrium, as well as the taking of biopsies in the case of suspicious lesions.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment will be performed using laparoscopic surgery (unless there are medical contraindications for this technique), which will greatly improve the patient's recovery.

Ovarian cancer

It is the third most common gynecological tumor in women, after breast and endometrial cancer, accounting for 23% of gynecological cancers. It also accounts for 47% of deaths due to malignant gynecological tumors.

Early diagnosis of ovarian cancer is considered essential for successful treatment in these patients. This diagnosis is primarily made through imaging techniques, hence the importance of using vaginal ultrasound in routine screening.

Once the diagnosis is established, if it is early, treatment can be performed using laparoscopic surgery by a team of expert oncological surgeons.

If the characteristics of the tumor or the stage at the time of diagnosis do not make it appropriate, treatment will be performed using conventional abdominal surgery, always with the goal of providing a satisfactory treatment that guarantees the best results for the patient.

Breast cancer

The diagnosis and treatment of breast pathology is one of the fields that has gained the most importance in our days due to the importance of early diagnosis and the possibility of less aggressive treatments with less impact on the quality of life of our patients.

The Gynecologic Oncology Department of the Women's Unit is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of specialists including gynecologists, radiologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and reconstructive medicine specialists, enabling us to achieve the best results while preserving the patient's quality of life and aesthetic appearance.
