At the Unidad de la Mujer we are committed to improving the quality of life of our patients from a functional and aesthetic point of view by using the newest techniques.

Women nowadays want to feel young in all aspects of their lives and improve those factors that prevent them from having a full life such as urinary incontinence, vaginal atrophy…

Laser technology has been used in gynecology for the past four years with revolutionary outcomes and is creating new prospects for the treatment of several problems.

Laser technology

CO2 and Er-YAG lasers (the most widely used in gynecology) act on tissues where water predominates (as the vaginal mucosa, inner face of the labia minora …). The effect of the laser on these tissues is based on its conversion of light into heat. This heat stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, improving the quality and thickness of vaginal tissue, balancing the vaginal pH and reducing vaginal and urinary infections (all of which have a positive influence on sexual intercourse).

Additional information

We know that collagen is the main support of the pelvic floor muscle (which weakens with age and breaks down massively during births and pregnancies). The loss of this collagen favors urinary incontinence (especially stress urinary incontinence). Laser techniques have proven efficient in the treatment of mild and moderate urinary incontinence and vaginal relaxation or hyperlaxity syndrome (secondary to deliveries of large children, multiple deliveries and instrumental deliveries).

The process of tissue hyperstimulation using laser lasts about 4-6 weeks, after which the need for further sessions will be evaluated.

The use of CO2 lasers is of special interest when treating of symptoms of menopausal genitourinary syndrome in women with a history of breast cancer (where HRT is not recommended). Also in patients with cardiovascular problems when other treatments are contraindicated.

Most of these treatments may require a booster dose at 12-18 months.

Clinical applications and indications of laser therapy in Gynecology

The FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) approved the use laser technology in 2014 on the grounds of its clinical efficacy and proven safety.
