Regular gynecologic checkups are probably the preventive health measure most firmly established in our society and one to which most women pay attention in developed countries. Thanks to this health habit the incidence and mortality rate of certain gynecologic cancers such as cervical, breast, and ovarian cancer, whose prognosis and survival rate is directly related to its size at the time of diagnosis, have been dramatically reduced.
Great improvements have also been made regarding the reproductive health of many women. Unwanted pregnancies can be avoided through the choice of the most suitable contraceptive method and a proper health education helps to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
Lastly, preventive health measures result in an enhanced quality of life for women at different stages of their lives, such as the menopause, promoting healthy habits both nutritional and of lifestyle which allow for a lesser risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
The gynecologic checkup will include Pap or an HPV test, a complete gynecological exam and a transvaginal ultrasound. These exams will be conveniently adapted to each patient’s circumstances and age. We recommend annual mammograms beginning at age 40.
