Myth or Reality: Is laser useless for gynecological pathology?

By Dr. Mª Esther Suárez Agustín, specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Women's Unit of the Ruber International Hospital.

It is a myth claim that the laser has no use in gynecological pathology.

For years, this tool has been used effectively in the treatment of various pathologies, offering advantages in both surgical precision and patient recovery.

Why is laser useful in gynecology?

The laser is a surgical tool that provides:

  • high precision in the treatment area.
  • Less bleeding and, consequently, a faster and less painful recovery.
  • Preservation of adjacent tissues, avoiding unnecessary damage.

Thanks to these qualities, it is used in different gynecological contexts:

  • Treatment for cervical dysplasias.
  • Elimination of condylomas caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) in vulva and vagina.
  • Management chronic vulvar pathologies, like lichen.
  • In recent years, also in the field of functional gynecology and gynecoesthetics, for example, in cases of mild urinary incontinence.

Why is there an idea that it is useless?

The controversy surrounding the laser is due to several factors:

  • Ignorance on its real applications.
  • High cost of the teams.
  • Long learning curve for specialists.
  • And, above all, the indiscriminate use in gynecoesthetics in recent years, when there were still not enough scientific studies to support its effectiveness.

Responsible and evidence-based use

Fractional CO₂ laser, used in clinical practice, has demonstrated benefits:

  • Stimulates the production of collagen in the mucous membranes.
  • Improves hydration, elasticity and toning.
  • It may be useful in the treatment of vaginal atrophy associated with menopause.

However, it should not be applied in a generalized manner or as a single solution. It is essential appropriately select patients, compare with other equally effective options and, above all, have the evaluation of a specialist with experience and ethical criteria.

The use of lasers in gynecology yes it is real and useful, as long as it is used properly, in expert hands and with the correct instructions.
