Physiotherapy for pregnancy in Madrid

During pregnancy, a multitude of physiological, postural, and anatomical changes occur. The muscular properties of the pelvic floor and the abdominolumbopelvic cavity are altered. Problems such as stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence, prolapse or lowering of the pelvic viscera, abdominal diastasis or pain during sexual intercourse, gas incontinence, fluid retention, pain, and more are common.

For this reason, it is recommended to do:

Pregnancy assessment

From the 16th week of pregnancy, a thorough medical history will be taken, including a physical examination (evaluation of lumbopelvic alignment, different abdominal planes, presence or absence of abdominal diastasis, pelvic floor, etc.) and recommendations will be given to promote the proper progression of the pregnancy.

Physiotherapy specialized in obstetrics

Recommended at any time during pregnancy, when problems such as stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence, prolapse or lowering of the pelvic viscera (uterus, bladder and rectum), abdominal diastasis or pain during sexual intercourse, gas incontinence, fluid retention, peripheral nerve entrapment, lower back and pelvic pain occur.

Physical therapy for childbirth preparation

Aimed at specific preparation for childbirth, recommended from week 34, manual therapy will be performed to unblock the lumbopelvic area, along with perineal massage and effective and safe pushing with Epi-no.

Postpartum physiotherapy in Madrid

All women, regardless of the type of delivery they have had, are exposed to overexertion during pregnancy and childbirth, which can damage pelvic, abdominal, perineal, and other structures.

For this reason, we recommend undergoing a functional assessment from a physiotherapy perspective approximately 6 weeks after vaginal delivery and 8 weeks after a cesarean section.

Functional ultrasound assessment of the abdomen and pelvic floor

Functional ultrasound is a highly advanced technique that provides greater precision and effectiveness in the assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor.

Postpartum rehabilitation

Urinary, anorectal and sexual dysfunctions, prolapse of pelvic organs, scars (episiotomy, cesarean section, abdominal diastasis, etc.).

ABS Challenge for abdominal recovery and postpartum abdominal diastasis

The "ABS Challenge" of the Women's Unit's Physiotherapy Unit achieves abdominal and postpartum diastasis recovery within a two-month period, and may include:

  • A manual and ultrasound assessment of the abdomen and pelvic floor, taking measurements, and determining which exercises are most appropriate on a personalized basis.
  • A 10-session package of radiofrequency and electrostimulation combined with exercises.
  • Weekly videos with specific exercises for abdominal and diastasis recti recovery.

Physiotherapy for menopause in Madrid

Urinary incontinence and pain during intercourse are some of the most common problems women experience when they experience the first symptoms of menopause due to the decrease in estrogen production.

Estrogens, among other functions, maintain the health of the tissues that form the walls of the bladder and urethra. When these hormones decrease, the walls of these organs atrophy, the pelvic muscles responsible for bladder control weaken, and urinary control problems begin.

On the other hand, this atrophy can lead to altered muscle tone and/or mucous membrane hydration, and pelvic and sexual pain. As a preventative measure, we recommend the following during perimenopause:

Functional ultrasound assessment of the pelvic floor

Recommended for those over 45, functional ultrasound allows us to see how the pelvic floor muscles react to actions or stimuli that could compromise the function of these muscles and the organs they protect. This allows for greater precision in our assessment and, therefore, makes it easier to choose and tailor a personalized treatment to each patient's needs.

OTHER AREAS OF APPLICATION

Effective treatment of pathologies

Aside from pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, there are other conditions for which physiotherapy offers effective treatment tools, such as:

Chronic pelvic pain

Pudendal nerve entrapment syndrome, interstitial cystitis, vulvar vestibulitis, and other conditions are all classified as chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS). Physical therapy offers effective treatment options with the advantage of being risk-free and free of side effects.

Vaginismus

Sexual dysfunction consisting of an involuntary spasm of the muscles surrounding the vagina, preventing penetration and accompanied by intense pain if forced. Physiotherapy addresses the physical dimension of this problem, complemented by psychology.

Pain during sexual intercourse

Physiotherapy will also help patients who experience discomfort during intercourse.

Urinary Incontinence

Three types of incontinence can be treated with physiotherapy: stress urinary incontinence (SUI), urge urinary incontinence (URI), and mixed incontinence, which is when both stress and urge symptoms are observed in the same patient.

Surgery (SUI, prolapse)

Post-surgical rehabilitation.

Incontinence of stool or gas and constipation

These disorders can also be effectively treated with physiotherapy.

WinBack® Technology

PHYSIOLOGICAL BIOACCELERATOR

In the Women's Unit, we use WinBack® technology, which uses different frequencies depending on the tissue we wish to treat and its depth or size. From the machine, the electromagnetic current passes through the body to a return plate, completing the circuit. The patient never experiences any electrical sensation; they only feel a pleasant warmth. The current generates an ionic movement that balances the intracellular electrical potential of each and every tissue in the body.

Winback® energy is a high-frequency current ranging from 300 kHz to 1 MHz. This noninvasive current stimulates the body's natural self-healing mechanisms, promoting intra- and extracellular metabolism. Combined with physiotherapy, it offers spectacular rehabilitation results thanks to rapid recovery of muscle and joint function. It is a true physiological bioaccelerator.

WOMAN CARE AND POSTPARTUM CARE

Many conditions can affect a woman's quality of life. Tecar therapy treatments play a fundamental role in improving daily life and the healing process: they relieve pain, aid recovery from physical activity, accelerate healing, and prevent disease.

Winback® therapy offers a proven solution for postpartum care. It reduces pain and accelerates healing, improving a woman's experience after childbirth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Click (+) for more information.
What is pelvic floor physiotherapy and what does it consist of?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is designed to prevent and treat problems related to the muscles and tissues of the pelvis, such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, abdominal diastasis, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Using manual techniques, personalized exercises, and advanced technology, the goal is to strengthen, relax, and restore functionality to the pelvic area, improving your quality of life.

When should I have a pelvic floor assessment?

It is advisable to undergo a pelvic floor assessment if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Loss of urine (urinary incontinence).
  • Incontinence of gas or feces.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Persistent lower back or pelvic pain.
  • Alterations in intestinal function.

An early assessment can prevent major problems and improve your well-being.

How can pelvic floor physical therapy help me during pregnancy and postpartum?

During pregnancy, the body undergoes physiological changes that can affect the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Physical therapy helps prevent and treat problems such as urinary incontinence, lower back pain, and abdominal diastasis recti. After childbirth, especially in the case of a cesarean section, physical therapy is essential for proper recovery of the pelvic, abdominal, and perineal structures.

What treatment is offered in the Women's Unit?

In our unit, we offer personalized treatments that include:

  • Physiotherapy specialized in Obstetrics during pregnancy and postpartum.
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation to correct incontinence and abdominal diastasis.
  • Using WinBack® technology, which accelerates recovery and reduces pain through non-invasive electromagnetic current.
