The Women's Unit turns 34!
Today, April 1th 2025, we celebrate with pride 34 years since the inauguration of the Women's Unit at Ruber International HospitalIn 1991, the hospital's management—then comprised of Mr. José Mª Bergaz as managing director, Dr. Eloy Fernández Corral as medical director, and Ms. María Luisa Cuadrado as financial director—entrusted me with the organization of this unit, which would become a pioneer not only in Spanish medicine but also internationally.
Accepting this challenge required some reflection. However, it didn't take me long to decide, as I was passionate about the project. I have always been a fervent admirer of women, and that's why I chose Gynecology as my specialty. Today more than ever, women occupy a central place in society, and I continue to be excited by the idea of having a Unit that cares for all stages of their lives.
Pregnancy management remains a fundamental pillar of our Unit, while childbirth, considered by many to be "the most complex human journey," must take place in a hospital with adequate facilities and a specialized medical team: gynecologists, midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatal pediatricians.
When natural conception is not possible, our Unit offers assisted reproduction solutions such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and egg or sperm donation. All of this helps many women achieve their dream of becoming mothers.
We also assist women over the age of 50, when they reach menopause. The loss of ovarian hormones causes symptoms that affect their quality of life. Therefore, we advocate for the responsible use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), whenever medically indicated.
Today, more than ever, advanced societies recognize the importance of women-specific medicine. Examples such as Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, and Kristy Coventry remind us of the crucial role of women in all areas.
Although our Unit has been replicated by other centers, we remain focused on improve the quality of our services, with the support of the hospital's management. I am deeply grateful to the Quirónsalud Group, Dr. Manuel Conde, Javier Feijoo, Dr. Mercedes Cuadrado, Ms. Amparo Francés, and the entire team involved in this story.
Over the years, colleagues such as Dr. José Miguel Villar Sáez, Dr. Rafael Jiménez Ruiz, Dr. Elena Carrillo de Albornoz, Dr. Elena Meliá, Dr. Esther Suárez, and many others have been key contributors to the Unit's growth and prestige.
Currently, we have specialized sections in:
Prenatal diagnosis (Dr. Ángel Lorenzo, Dr. Sara Rubio)
Menopause and gynecological checkups (Drs. Meliá and Suárez)
Breast cancer (Drs. Suárez and Vega Cabezuelo)
Gynecological cancer (Drs. Álvarez Duque)
Gynecology (Drs. Cabezuelo, Meliá, Dr. Alfonso Duque)
General Gynecology (Dr. Isabel Rodríguez-Piñero, Drs. Sebastián Sesay and Carlos de la Granda)
Gynecological Surgery (Drs. Julio Álvarez Bordallo and Luis González)
Assisted reproduction (Drs. Yoseu Franco, Drs. Meliá, Cabezuelo, Suárez, Buendjo, Silvia Intensa)
Today, I feel more proud than ever to have created and led the Women's Unit. And I'm grateful to all the women who entrust their health to us, and to the team that makes this dream a reality every day.
Happy anniversary, Women's Unit at Ruber International Hospital!
