Mastodynia or cyclical breast pain
Breast pain is very common in women and can be caused by many different reasons. Thus, Dr. Isabel Rodríguez-Piñero, a specialist from the gynecology and obstetrics team of the Women's Unit at the Ruber International Hospital, explains what the mastodynia or cyclical breast pain, something that many women of childbearing age suffer from.
What is mastodynia?
It is a very frequent question in consultation, and that is that mastodynia is the cyclical breast pain that women suffer before menstruation or during the ovulation period and which usually eases with the arrival of your period. The reason is mainly the hormonal changes that occur during the process, although there are other factors that can be decisive, which we'll discuss below.
It should be noted that mastodynia is not the same as mastalgia, as the latter is general or non-cyclical breast pain, the origin of which can be due to multiple factors: cysts, mastitis, vascular processes, etc.
What factors influence mastodynia?
Our diet can influence premenstrual breast pain. Specifically, one of the most determining factors is the consumption of foods high in methylxanthines. Methylxanthines are central nervous system stimulants found in products such as chocolate, coffee, wine, black tea, cheeses, etc.
Another influencing factor is nicotine consumption, that is, tobacco, as well as the intake of alcohol.
On the other hand, the type of sport you practice can also influence mastodynia. For example, if we do impact and rough sport, we run the risk of the mammary gland moving over the pectoral, causing breast pain.
Finally, one of the most common factors, and one that many women do not take into account, is the wearing the wrong bra sizeThe reality is that wearing a bra that's both the right fit and the right size is essential, both for sports and for everyday life. Wearing the wrong bra size is a very common reason we encounter breast pain in consultations. That's why we have a chart in our consultations that allows patients to measure their circumference, back, and so on, to determine their correct size.
In any case, it is important to make clear that cyclical and menstrual breast pain It does not pose any alarm symptoms and is completely normal., so the patient should not worry. However, if in doubt, it is best to go to the specialist and, of course, always perform regular gynecological check-ups to prevent, detect early and assess any pain or symptoms.
