Christmas 2020: Everything changes... or not? Reflections by Elena Iracheta, psychologist at the University of Madrid (UDM).

This year has been different in every way, and difficult for many. However, perhaps it's a good time to experience Christmas 2020 differently , in a relaxed way, without so much hustle and bustle, without unnecessary shopping, without spending so many hours in the kitchen… It could be a good time for each of us to see each situation in a positive light.

Christmas 2020: Psychological Consequences of the Pandemic

The WHO provides some rather shocking data: emotional fatigue associated with COVID may be affecting 60% of the European population . This prolonged pandemic situation means that everything unfolds differently and becomes an intense stressor with serious psychological consequences.

Constantly dwelling on the restrictions only increases our frustration and irritation. The lack of freedom exacerbates anxiety, insomnia, and depression—restlessness, sadness, and unease. This is the downside of this unusual Christmas. But we don't want to dwell on this negativity; instead, we want to turn things around and see what we can do to feel better.

Tips to overcome this atypical Christmas

It's important to do things that break us out of this pandemic routine. Going out for a coffee somewhere different, making Christmas video calls with friends we won't be able to see, buying a little something we'd love to give as a gift… Changing things up a bit, breaking our routine , will make us feel better.

Sacrifice may be hard for many, but it's essential if we want to experience a Christmas like always in 2021.

Now we have to do things right and follow the rules . We shouldn't gather in large groups in enclosed spaces (if we don't live together, it's important to wear masks and ensure good ventilation). And let's not forget frequent handwashing, using hand sanitizer and paper towels for drying hands, not sharing plates at the table, and marking glasses with stickers…

From a psychological point of view, perhaps we are better prepared to face these days, since we have been living with the virus for months, we know the preventive measures and we must continue with them , being even more responsible in these coming days.

I'm sure next year's Christmas will be like we've always experienced it, and this year will be remembered as a bad dream.
