When should I start a childbirth preparation course?

It's recommended to start a childbirth preparation course around week 20 of pregnancy. This will allow you enough time to absorb the information and practice the techniques you'll learn before labor is too close. The courses are designed to prepare you both physically and emotionally, and starting during this time ensures that you arrive at the birth of your baby with confidence and serenity.


Is it necessary to take a childbirth preparation course if I have already had a child?

Even if you've already had a child, it's highly recommended to repeat the childbirth preparation course, as every pregnancy and birth are unique. Furthermore, you'll be able to select the classes that interest you most, and the courses have evolved and may offer you new and updated information. It can also be an excellent opportunity to refresh your knowledge, learn new techniques, and prepare yourself physically and emotionally for this new chapter. While it may seem like you already know everything, this course will provide you with a space to reconnect with your body and the experience of childbirth.


Can parents or guardians attend classes?

Of course! In fact, we recommend that the father or a companion participate in the online classes. However, to ensure more personalized attention, the in-person prenatal gym session is limited to a maximum of 10 mothers, who must attend unaccompanied.


How long does the Women's Unit's childbirth preparation course last?

The duration of this childbirth preparation course is completely flexible, allowing you to adapt it to your needs, choosing the sessions that are most interesting to you. If you complete the entire course, the approximate duration is one month with one or two sessions per week.


What is the hybrid model of classes?

For your convenience, all sessions are taught online via Zoom, with the exception of the prenatal gymnastics class, which is held in person at the Ruber International Hospital. This in-person session is limited to a maximum of 10 mothers to offer more personalized attention, and participants must attend unaccompanied.

How will a childbirth preparation course help me during labor and postpartum?

This childbirth preparation course will help you feel more prepared, confident, and empowered during labor. You'll learn relaxation and breathing techniques to manage pain, understand the stages of labor so you're not caught off guard, and make informed decisions about pain management. It will also teach you how to take care of yourself after childbirth, how to cope with hormonal and physical changes, and how to successfully initiate breastfeeding. All of this will give you greater peace of mind and confidence, reducing stress both during and after labor.


What topics are covered in the Women's Unit's childbirth preparation course?

  • Pregnancy Medical Checkup (90 minutes). Class taught by Dr. Ángel Lorenzo, gynecologist at the Women's Unit. Topics covered include physical changes, warning signs, medical follow-up, disease prevention, common digestive problems, weight gain and loss, urinary disorders, circulation, muscle pain, cramps, and contractions.
  • Prenatal Exercises (90 minutes). This in-person, hands-on session is taught by physiotherapist María Escribano. Participants must attend unaccompanied, wearing comfortable clothing and socks. It includes back stretches, birthing exercises, relaxation techniques, and pain management.
  • Cognitive and Psychomotor Development of the Baby (75 minutes). Class led by Elena Iracheta, clinical psychologist at the Women's Unit, on the cognitive and psychomotor development and stimulation of the baby during its first year of life.
  • Stages of labor and the birth process (2.5 hours). Class taught by Mª Jesús Sánchez, midwife in the Women's Unit. Instructions on when to go to the hospital, stages of labor, positions, types of birth, procedures, skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, the father's role, and postpartum care.
  • Pushing and Breathing (90 minutes). Class taught by Pilar Cortés, a physical therapist from the Women's Unit. Breathing simulation for pain control, pushing technique, and postpartum advice are included. You can also complement this session with individual visits to the hospital for perineal massages by booking our physiotherapy services privately.
  • Newborn Care (90 minutes). Class taught by Dr. Pilar Lamamie, pediatrician at Ruber International Hospital. Includes maternity ward routines and tests (shopping, vaccinations, vitamins, and percentiles), newborn characteristics and characteristics, a basic baby instruction manual, safety, and umbilical cord blood stem cell cryopreservation.
  • Postpartum Care and Postpartum Guidance for Mothers (90 minutes). Class taught by Dr. Isabel Rodríguez-Piñero, focusing on postpartum recovery and postpartum care for mothers.

  • How long are the classes?

    The sessions of the Women's Unit's childbirth preparation course last approximately 90 minutes, except for the session taught by the midwife, which is extended to 2 hours to provide more detailed and practical content.
