We restart reproductive activity in our Unit
Since mid-March, we had to stop the cycles of Assisted reproduction in our Unit out of prudence, given the lack of knowledge at the time about the influence of the Coronavirus on reproduction and pregnancy, given the spread of the pandemic, given the obligation to comply with the State of Emergency ordered by the health authorities, avoiding population movements, and given the requirement to put our resources at the service of the Spanish health system.
The situation has since changed and, once the most critical moment of the Pandemic in Spain has passed, The Ministry of Health has authorized the reopening of Reproduction Centers, so we are gradually resuming our activity in a reasoned and evidence-based manner.
Factors that support the return to normal of our Assisted Reproduction Unit
- Infertility is a disease in which the time factor worsens the prognosis. That's why It is essential not to delay treatments once the safety conditions for our patients have been guaranteed.
- According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pregnant women do not appear to be at increased risk of severe COVID-19 progression compared to non-pregnant women of the same age, and the clinical manifestations are also no different. Coronavirus during pregnancy has also not been shown to have harmful (teratogenic) effects on the fetus.
- Based on current evidence, vertical transmission of the virus (from mother to fetus) cannot be completely ruled out. Scientific studies report very few positive cases in newborns of mothers with Coronavirus, and all of them had a good outcome. To date, no scientific society or government in any country has advised against natural pregnancy.
- Assisted reproduction techniques have not been shown to be a source of transmission of the disease.
- Quality in national reproductive laboratories is regulated by law and requires the implementation of quality systems. Thanks to these common practices in our centers, we established quality systems years ago. strict protocols which are sufficient to prevent contagion between patients, healthcare personnel and contamination of reproductive samples.
- new security measures Measures aimed at preventing contagion in our consultations have been audited. Doctor-patient communication is also facilitated by phone, video calls, and email.
- For each case We will individually assess the risk/benefit to start or continue treatment at that time depending on comorbidities, the appearance of COVID-19 symptoms, or positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests.
