Pregnancy monitoring in the Women's Unit
When a woman first discovers she's pregnant, usually with a home pregnancy test, it's normal to experience fears, worries, and a big question: what now? At the Women's Unit of Ruber International Hospital, we have an Obstetrics team that will monitor your entire pregnancy, ensuring you're always in the best hands.
Pregnancy and childbirth are key moments in a woman's life, and therefore, we believe it is essential to provide appropriate support, offering the most advanced prenatal diagnostic equipment.
Furthermore, during World Respectful Childbirth Week , we would like to highlight the importance that we at UDM place on offering personalized and attentive childbirth care, which allows us to maintain the human side of this vital moment and always guarantees maternal and fetal well-being.
Pregnancy monitoring
At the Women's Unit, as we mentioned, we offer our patients personalized pregnancy monitoring . From the very beginning, women can choose the gynecologist they wish to see for this monitoring, who will be supported at all times by a team of specialists for the different phases of pregnancy care.
Prenatal diagnostic tests
One of the fundamental aspects during pregnancy monitoring, and one that most concerns couples, are prenatal diagnostic tests , which allow checking the correct evolution of the pregnancy and detecting possible abnormalities.
- First trimester ultrasounds. It is one of the most anticipated tests for couples. It is performed between weeks 11 and 13+6 of pregnancy, usually transabdominally. The goal is to make a prenatal diagnosis of major anomalies, determine the exact gestational age, predict problems originating in the placenta, and establish the fetus's risk of having a chromosomal abnormality, such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome). For this purpose, combined screening is performed, which combines ultrasound data (nuchal translucency and the baby's size, with the crown-rump measurement), the mother's age, and a biochemical analysis that assesses the mother's blood level of two proteins (free ß-HCG and PAPP-A). This calculation provides an estimate of the risk of suffering from certain chromosomal abnormalities, with a sensitivity of 90% and just a 5% false positive rate.
- Morphological ultrasound. This is the second-trimester ultrasound, performed between weeks 18 and 22. Its main objectives are to perform a morphological study of the baby, observe organ development, perform a Doppler study of the uterine arteries, and assess the length of the cervix. All of this is done to rule out fetal abnormalities. Our specialists hold level III and IV certifications from the Ultrasound Section of the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SEGO), and we also use state-of-the-art equipment.
- Fetal DNA study. This is a noninvasive screening test that analyzes fetal DNA through maternal blood to estimate the risk of developing chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Patau syndrome, Edwards-Turner syndrome, and Klinedfelter syndrome. Its accuracy is 99%. This test can also determine the baby's sex.
- FLM quantus test, the first 100% non-invasive fetal lung maturity test. This test offers the possibility of predicting Neonatal Respiratory Morbidity without performing amniocentesis.
- Other invasive techniques. If necessary, more invasive tests such as chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, and cordocentesis are performed, which allow for the collection of fetal genetic material. These tests can be used to diagnose more than 120 serious genetic syndromes.
Childbirth care at the UDM
Childbirth is a time of many fears and worries for a woman, but also one of the most important and exciting moments of her life. That's why at UDM we want it to be a special, humanized experience, allowing women to feel cared for, understood, and supported at all times.
At the time of delivery, you will, in most cases, be attended by the gynecologist who monitored your pregnancy. You will also be accompanied by a midwife and an anesthesiologist specializing in obstetrics.
In the Women's Unit, we also have the best monitoring equipment and a neonatal ICU.
Antenatal classes
With the UDM Childbirth Preparation Course , offered by professionals from our unit, women will receive advice regarding physical and psychological preparation for childbirth, as well as for the postpartum period.
This is an online course, except for the prenatal gymnastics class, and is completely personalized, as the woman decides which classes she wants to take. It can also be supplemented with individual visits to the physiotherapy unit.
