Myth or Fact: Is the HPV vaccine only effective in teenagers?

The belief that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is only effective during adolescence is a myth . While it is true that the optimal time for vaccination is before the onset of sexual activity—when its preventive effectiveness is at its peak— the usefulness of this vaccine extends far beyond adolescence.
Why is it considered a myth?
Today, thanks to numerous scientific studies, we know that the HPV vaccine remains effective even in adults. Furthermore, there are specific risk groups for whom vaccination is even more crucial:
- People with weakened immune systems due to illness or immunosuppressive treatments, such as prolonged use of high-dose corticosteroids, transplant patients, or people with HIV.
- Women who have already had lesions caused by HPV. Even if the virus has caused damage previously, vaccination can be key to prevent new injuries and prevent the progression of the disease.
So… what’s the best time?
The best time to get vaccinated remains adolescence, before exposure to the virus. But it's not the only time . There are many situations in which vaccination is still beneficial, regardless of age.
